Living in Colorado the landscape always seem to be alive with always changing scenery as the clouds and lighting is move in and out. It is very comment to be in nice 70 degree sunny weather and watch at the same time it snowing in the high country of the Rocky Mountain Peaks. The views here are for miles and miles.
Back in the 80’s I can remember the brown cloud that was so bad you could not see the City of Denver. One time we were driving down I-25 heading south and you could not see the city right in front of you. When we got south of the city you could look back and see it perfect with the wall of the brown cloud behind it. That has changed with the EPA. Now we get normal haze fro time to time and more from wild fires then smog. Makes for great sunrises and sunsets that are always spectacular.

A scenic view of the Boulder Flatirons in the distance from Coot Lake in Boulder County Colorado as a thunderstorm is rolling in over the Rocky Mountains. This place is a dogs paradise. If you live here and have not been out here, you will want to put this on your list.
Located roughly at 63 St. and north of the Diagonal. You can also walk to the backside of Boulder Reservoir. Lots of open space with breath taking views. Here is beautiful golden retriever taking a swim making for a golden afternoon.
Hi…. My Name Is Bo Insogna, (Pronounced like lasagna ) I am a recovering Lightning Storm Chaser. This will be year 30 for me as it all started in 1987 at Arizona Monsoon Season. When thunder roars…. I am normally out the door (now they have an app for that. LOL).
Grab my gear and I am gone and who knows where and how long. Always feel bad for my wife as I leave the house to make my rounds and she says the same thing every time… “Be Safe”.
It’s like being on call 24/7. Get’s under your skin in a good way… you feel like you are going to miss that big shot if you are not out there. For many years I would make the rounds every night during storm season looking for “thee shot” and action.
Anywho… as I get older… (cough cough) I have decided to not let it drive me crazy and just pick my storms. (safety is Numero Uno) And BREATH to release the anxiety!
I mostly stay local. Maybe one of these days I will chase some flying cows. Soooooo… that being said the only thing that would have made this shot better would have been the lightning that was in the air moving north. It hit three times where I wanted it before I got set up.
It was smacking around the front range to the north and east of me. June 29th, 2017. Happens to be my father’s birthday. Thanks Dad! Happy Birthday! Would have been, I think 93. This is not the first time that he sent me lightning on his birthday either.
This is a view of highway 36 cars and car lights coming into and out of Boulder Colorado with one of the many majestic sunset that seem to happen on a regular basis. Hope you enjoy this image.

Spring is such a great time a year when everything comes back to life. It has a way of putting a skip in your step because the color start to show with spring flowers. And with spring comes storms, a favorite time of year for storm chasers. The weather is getting crazier and crazier each year. This will be my 30th year chasing severe thunderstorms and may be my last. Time will tell on that. Storms season takes over your life as a chaser. Like being on call 24/7.
When the storms come in my phone go off with warnings, bells and sirens. Weather apps. My favorite for lightning is weather bug. Click on spark and you can see lightning strikes and how lose they are. very cool. Anyway lightning has always been my favorite subject because it happens so quick but in a photo you can study it. For me it has always been about the composition and art.
These days everyone wants to be a storm chaser. All I can say is be very very careful out there. We just lost a few more chasers this year and it is early season. My style is to stay local and mostly lightning storms. Not into flying cows with tornadoes. Never in my life have I see so many people outThank you thank you thank youside trying to spot the twister. There is a lot of danger in all this and be prepared for HAIL. I HATE HAIL! It makes me run away like a screaming little girl. Not that there is anything wrong with that. 🙂 Hail hurts and destroys. Safety is always number one. So be careful out there. When thunder roars…. run indoors.
Here is a a monster thunderstorm cloud towering over a rustic rural old farm house in North East Boulder County Colorado on the Edge of Longmont. Love how this looks like it is going to gobble up this little rural rustic house. It’s all about the art. Hope you enjoy.

Extreme weather and severe thunderstorms are a common thing year round in Colorado. Storms blow in and out pretty quickly. The wind here can be amazing with it’s force. In the winter time when temperatures hit the 60 and 70 in the low land and foothills the cold air of the Rocky Mountains elevation and the warm air from the lower plains produces some interesting wind. Anywhere else it would be a hurricane but here it is just high winds, and I am talking 30-140 mph.
I remember in the mid eighties going skiing and all the telephone poles on hwy 93 were tilted in a very big way after some 140 mph winds.
In the spring all our weather heads out to the east of the Rockies… Nebraska and Kansas and that’s when tornadoes start to spring up. The mountain cool air hitting the warm air of the country plains. Every year seems to get more extreme. Climate Change?
This a scenic view from north Boulder County Colorado along the foothills looking south to Haystack Mountain and Boulder. A Lightning anvil crawler is striking above haystack like an octopus monster in the sky. A terminology used for cloud-cloud or cloud-cloud-ground lightning is “Anvil Crawler”, due to the habit of the charge typically originating from beneath or within the anvil and scrambling through the upper cloud layers of a thunderstorm, normally generating multiple branch strokes which are dramatic to witness.

Extreme weather and severe thunderstorm with lightning striking in the sky above an oil pump-jack. When I look at this lightning striking in the sky it reminds me of Michelangelo famous painting “The Creation Of Adam”. But of course that is just my imagination. We are getting close to storm season this will be my 30th year chasing lightning. At this point in my career I tend t pick my storms, but when storm season is here it really takes over my life. Like being on call 24/7. I like to stay pretty local but will do a couple tips east, safety is number one.

A Day in the life of a storm catcher, photographer Bo Insogna, These thunderstorm cells are so cool to watch as the float around the landscape in the spring and summer months. They come in fast and head out to the Colorado eastern plains and out to Kansas and Nebraska where the tornadoes kick up. Colorado Lightning Thunderstorm Time Lapse Video Short.
Lightning Fact: Cloud-to-ground lightning bolts are very common there about 100 that strike the planets surface every single second—their power is inconceivable. Each lightning bolt can contain up to one billion volts of electricity. This humongous electrical discharge is caused by an imbalance between positive and negative charges.

Scenic view looking southwest toward Boulder and of the Lohr-McIntosh Farm in Longmont Colorado with lightning striking overhead and hitting the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. Lightning often strikes more than three miles from the center of the thunderstorm, far outside the rain or thunderstorm cloud. “Bolts from the blue” can strike 10-15 miles from the thunderstorm. When lightning strikes the ground it seeks out the shortest route to something with a positive charge, this might be a tree, a tall building or if they’re very unlucky, a person. The movement of rain and ice inside a thundercloud creates an electrical charge, with the negative charge (electrons) forming at the bottom of the cloud and the positive charge (protons) forming at the top.

A lightning bolt starting high up in the clouds striking the ground. Giant cloud to ground C2G lightning bolt hitting the horizon of city lights. NE Boulder County Colorado. August 20th, 2011, 11:00Pm. These thunderstorm cells are so much fun to watch, especially from a safe distance like this. Like watching dancing lightning bolts on the horizon. And every year it seems to get a little more extreme. This next one should be an interesting one. It will by my 30th year chasing lightning storms.
Here are some cool facts about lightning.
The movement of rain and ice inside a thundercloud creates an electrical charge, with the negative charge (electrons) forming at the bottom of the cloud and the positive charge (protons) forming at the top.
Lightning strikes usually last around 1 or 2 microseconds.
Lightning contains millions of volts of electricity.
CG lightning or cloud-to-ground lightning is a type where electrostatic discharge takes place between cloud and ground.
People who are struck by lightning are often temporarily covered with what’s known as red Lichtenberg figures, which are branching, tree-like patterns created by the passage of high voltage electrical discharges along the skin.
When lightning strikes sand or rock, the extreme heat can fuse minerals beneath the surface into a tube called a fulgurite. Colorado thunderstorms pick up in the late afternoon almost everyday during summer monsoon season late July and August. A Big isolated giant thunderhead that boiled up and sunset and moved pretty quick.
This was one of those such clouds you could see a lot of action going on very fast as it grew in size and headed out to the Colorado eastern plains. This would be a great print to mount on the ceiling in a room.
I did not realize there was a face in this cloud until someone pointed it out. Can you see it?
