Rocks stacked and lined up in formation on the flagstone shore banks of Carter Lake in Larimer County Colorado.
The fine art of “stacking rocks” has been around for a long long time. In fact, this practice has been in existence for so long that archeologists have no way of determining when it first began.
These rock piles are called cairns and often mark hiking routes in parks.
Cairns have been and are used for a broad variety of purposes. In prehistoric times, they were raised as markers, as memorials and as burial monuments (some of which contained chambers).
In modern times, cairns are often raised as landmarks, especially to mark the summits of mountains.
The gradual stacking and arranging of little boulders and stones on top of each another creates a massive and stunning formation. It can be seen as a metaphor for progress and expansion.
Also stacking a lot of rocks may end up with a dream about finding balance.
Add a little balance and zen to your decor.
